Storyboard workflow for media production

The storyboard is a document that helps translate an idea from just an idea to production and finalization. But as we moved into new development tools and a streamlined process we needed to start producing production ready storyboards. These storyboards include all information that an illustrator would need to create artwork. An animator and developer can use for animation. But also to facilitate conversations and approvals of concepts before getting to production.

The storyboard process has also helped us build a library of illustrations that are either ready to use or can be easily edited by an illustrator. Using illustrations that are close to the final piece of artwork also helps visualize the final product which has helped with approvals and production.

The processes is on going and templates are setup for ease of updating and as well change. Check-in meetings have been setup within the creative department after each production sprint for feedback on the storyboards. Specialized templates have also been created dependent on on-screen interactions and artwork needs.

Benefits have included faster development, and less rework in final stages of development. A philosophy of questioning ideas, and layout during the storyboard process has helped alleviate some stress as well. Because we work out questions before getting the idea to production.
